Maternity emergencies

Go directly to the nearest hospital maternity unit or call 998 for an ambulance if you experience any of the following during pregnancy or after birth:

• - Heavy vaginal bleeding
• - Severe abdominal pain that does not ease
• - Signs of pre-eclampsia: severe headache, blurred vision, sudden swelling of face or hands
• - Reduced or no baby movements (after 24 weeks)
• - High fever with chills
• - Difficulty breathing
• - Chest pain
• - Seizures or loss of consciousness

Newborn concerns

Seek emergency care immediately if your baby shows any of the following:

• - Not breathing, or very rapid or slow breathing
• - Blue or grey skin, lips, or fingernails
• - Unresponsive or very difficult to wake
• - High-pitched or unusual cry that does not stop
• - Seizures or jerking movements
• - High fever (above 38°C / 100.4°F) in a baby under 3 months
• - Projectile vomiting after every feed
• - Sunken fontanelle (soft spot) or other signs of dehydration
